The Penn State Alumni AssociationWhat’s been happening: The years in Happy Valley were the most notable and memorable years of my life because of the lifelong friendships that continue to the present. Unforgettable of course are the Skellar and Hi Way Pizza. I earned my Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1972) from the University of Pittsburgh and employed at the University of California, San Francisco. My work involved multiple sclerosis research and the University's government-sponsored HIV/AIDS dementia project. Research professors keep their faculty appointments by doing some teaching. I was responsible for instructing first year nursing students who needed introductory biochemistry. I retired after 30 years and proceeded to do something more productive with my life in a more humanitarian sense while still young and healthy. Even at this advanced age I still play basketball and run regularly, and my principle distraction is my model railroading hobby. I also involve myself as a tutor and mentor, giving of my time offering assistance to inner city African American youth as they struggle to succeed scholastically while existing in an environment of drugs and violence. I am also a volunteer teacher's aide at the local high school here in my home town of Sonoma. I am also heavily involved in several outreach ministries at my Church, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, where I am director of Christian Education, and adult Church School teacher. |
